Magazine Makers District

Magazine Makers District was a conceptual re-design of the Trader Joe’s and Microcenter site in Cambridgeport, Massachusetts. The restrictions of the prompt were redevelop 40% of the site for housing as well as preserving the Marriott Hotel that is currently on the site. My team noticed a lack of artist spaces in the Cambridge area and saw there was a need for artist live/work spaces given the proximity to three major college institutions as well as the success of such living spaces in the nearby city of Somerville.
We reactivated the ground floor of the site with commercial retail spaces as well as areas for public gathering. Additionally we provided basic infrastructure for artists to work and also create installations so that members of the community could watch the artists at work. We also propsoed many studio spaces that could serve as both living or working residences.
